For me, the holiday season is a time for joy and celebration even during stressful times. In a way, the holidays ground me and remind me of what is truly important.
I have a few personal traditions at this time which I have described below.
One tradition is to reflect on the past year and set a few goals for next year. I review the major events of the year and journal them so that they will be remembered. Some of these journals include not only writings but pictures of trips during the year. Based on these, I define what I want to do for next year.
Another tradition is to drive around my neighborhood and see the decorations. It seems that the displays just get larger, brighter, and more detailed. These displays are not only Christmas decorations, but I have seen menorahs, dreidels, lighthouses, icicles, and Disney and Peanuts characters lighting up the streets.
The decorations bring a joyous tone to the neighborhood and also seems to put my neighbors into a good mood judging by the number of hellos and waves I get while driving by.
Another tradition I have is to make donations to charitable organizations. While I do some during the year, I give to all the organizations with which I have a personal connection. It just feels good to be helping those who need help. It’s a small thing to do to make a difference, but it always feels good to give back.
For the fourth tradition, I take some time off and just relax. I plan to do nothing but for some reason, it just doesn’t seem to always work out that way.
Yes, the holidays can be stressful, so it’s important to take some time to recharge.
I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season filled with peace, good health, and joy.
