An Electronic Mental Health Newsletter from Joel I. Kimmel, Ph.D., P.A. & Associates Volume 20, Number 6/7
“Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow; it only saps today of its joy.”
Leo Buscaglia
Most of us worry from time to time. A little worry can be helpful because it motivates us to prepare for challenges. However, excessive worrying can increase anxiety, interfere with daily life, and keep us focused on problems that may never happen.
This month’s blog, Living in Florida and Learning to Love the Heat, can be found here.
Today’s world constantly feeds us information through news, social media, emails, and advertising. Much of it is designed to grab our attention by creating concern or uncertainty in order to buy the products they are selling. As a result, many people spend a great deal of time worrying about situations they cannot control.

One study found that:
- 40% of our worries never happen
- 30% concern events from the past
- 12% involve unnecessary health concerns
- 10% are minor or insignificant issues
- Only 8% involve legitimate concerns
In other words, most of our worries are about things we cannot change or situations that are unlikely to occur.
Many worries begin with “What if…?” thinking:
- What if I fail?
- What if something bad happens?
- What if I can’t handle it?
The reality is that most of these feared situations never occur. Even when challenges arise, people are often far more capable of handling them than they realize.
What You Can Do!
- Identify your “What If” thoughts and challenge them.
- Focus on what you can control and let go of what you cannot.
- Practice deep breathing, meditation, or mindfulness.
- Exercise regularly and maintain healthy habits.
- Limit exposure to excessive news and social media.
- Remind yourself: “I can handle whatever comes my way.”
